The 2013 List of Working Mother Gratitudes

10.  The Fellini-esque absurdity of trying to explain the Miley Cyrus “Wrecking Ball” video to my eight year old son reminded me how deeply creative I can be when backed into a corner.

9.   Managing to walk the fine line between a glass of wine to take the edge off and full-blown alcoholism for yet another year.  Cheers!

8.  Target, for the recent privacy violations which will now force me to pay cash for my purchases, ensuring that I won’t walk out of there having spent four times the amount I had wanted to on that dress, throw pillow, and tchotchke I didn’t  really need.

7.  The elimination of the filibuster which may result in getting things done in Washington like gun control legislation so I don’t have to light a candle and say a novena every time I drop my off children at school.

6.  The introduction of the FAMILY Act which has a long road ahead of it but at least puts it out here that we are the only developed country without paid maternity leave.

5.  The Kardashians and the Real Housewives of Whatever for delivering mindless programming that shuts my thinking brain off and allows me to relax.   My husband thinks it is a sign of the end of Western Civilization but I say it’s better than Xanax.

4.  My girlfriends for helping me stay sane and grounded and stopping me from running away to Italy when things got tough.  At least not without them.

3. My partner in crime and soul mate for reminding me that cleaning fresh dog poop from a soccer cleat is hilarious rather than disturbing and nauseating.

2.  Starbucks.  That is all.  Just Starbucks.

1.  Having the chance to try to have it all on my terms, by my definition, in spite of the managed chaos and craziness that is being a working mother!
