Yesterday I picked up my boys from elementary school early and took them directly to Dairy Queen where I allowed them to order medium-sized ice creams instead of the usual small. I decreed it an official dessert before dinner day. Friends came over last night with their child and we spent the evening baking, decorating cupcakes, and watching a Christmas movie. This morning I woke up snuggled between both boys – and slightly damp as my five-year old wet the bed (my bed). I couldn’t have been happier. By the way, my son rarely wets the bed but I seem to write about it every time he does. But Scout’s honor he doesn’t have a bladder problem – just a passive aggressive mother.
After my damp morning alarm I marched them out to the kitchen and fed them each one of their fantastically decorated cupcakes. Their rooms are a mess and I just don’t care. In an hour I’ll run them up to their grandparent’s where they will have brunch with Santa.
I’d like to ask anyone reading this post to join me in my wayward parenting methodology for just a little bit. Because as utterly bereft of logic or humanity as yesterday’s events at the Sandy Hook Elementary School are, and as hopeless every parent feels right now. We can do just one small thing to honor those twenty children – who were EXACTLY like our children – and their forty parents and countless step parents – who are EXACTLY like us. We can use this unspeakable event to remind us to love our children fiercely and unashamedly. To kiss them when we drop them off at school – in front of their friends. To gush over their art project – and proudly show it off to our friends. To take time off of work to attend their class field trip. To hold their little hands lovingly in ours when we drag them around running errands. To let them eat dessert for dinner – and let it be your special secret.
So before all the analysis, and finger-pointing, and calls for gun control, and missed warning signs I ask each of you, most humbly, to create a bubble of love around your children and hang out in there with them for as long as you can. Let this be the one good thing we stubbornly refuse to let evil touch.
